BLUE BORDERS
2003
The desire to push the boundary of two-dimensional space initiated
Blue Borders, a three-dimensional drawing installation project. The intent is to have physical as well as visual experience of the work. The entire concept is based on spatial relationship determined by the interaction between the layers of paper and the viewer.
The first encounter of the work is a visual experience seeing through the hanging cut-paper panels. However, as the viewer walks around and moves in and out of the spaces in between the paper panels, one can physically explore the drawing. The panels are extensively cut in geometric or curvilinear shapes creating multi-layered biomorphic and architectonic spaces.
In my studio, the working process is similar to that of an anatomy laboratory. Much like dissecting an organism, I use a surgical blade to cut into the paper taking out certain areas, leaving the skeletal part of the paper and simultaneously revealing negative and positive spaces that are interchangeable. Furthermore, deconstruction of a drawing begins as I separate and hang individual pieces of paper fro the ceiling in a linear format filling the entire exhibition space, transforming the work into a three-dimensional drawing. In effect I am deconstructing and reconstructing the drawing in a physical space.
